1960s John F. Kennedy “I Like Hike” Physical Fitness Button – Orange Variety
Colorful “I LIKE HIKE” button from the John F. Kennedy era, associated with the nationwide enthusiasm for physical fitness and hiking encouraged during his presidency. Kennedy made physical fitness a highly visible national issue, urging Americans—particularly young people—to become more active and embrace what he called a more vigorous life.
The wonderfully simple slogan appears to be a playful take on Dwight Eisenhower’s enormously successful “I Like Ike” campaign slogan. Politics aside, the rhyme was simply too good to pass up: I Like Ike became I Like Hike.
This is the orange color variety and is marked "Emress" on the curl. We are aware of a total of three different color versions of this button, making the individual colors an interesting collecting specialty in their own right.
An attractive and unusual Kennedy-era button combining presidential history, popular culture, and the physical-fitness movement of the early 1960s.
President Kennedy became a forceful advocate for improved American physical fitness. The movement received considerable publicity during Kennedy's presidency and helped make hiking, walking and physical conditioning part of the national conversation
