Civil War patriotic cover featuring the Great Seal of Maryland printed in blue with the dates 1632 and 1854 and the slogan: “Marylanders know their rights, and knowing, dare maintain them.”
The design incorporates Maryland’s heraldic imagery, including the Calvert shield and supporting figures beneath an eagle, creating a bold state-pride composition from the Civil War era. Covers referencing border states such as Maryland are especially interesting given the divided loyalties and political tensions present during the conflict.
Unused example with attractive appearance and light age-related toning. An excellent addition for collectors of Civil War patriotic covers, Maryland historical material, and Union-era political ephemera.

From an amazing collection of patriotic Civil War historical covers we recently acquired in very fine condition that we will be offering in the weeks to come.
Maryland occupied a uniquely sensitive position during the Civil War as a slave state that remained in the Union. Patriotic covers referencing Maryland often reflected themes of constitutional rights, state identity, and loyalty during a period when the state’s allegiance carried enormous strategic importance for both North and South.
