1987 Washington D.C. Mayor Marion Barry Inaugural License Plate. It's not often you see a Mayor's office create license plates for his/her inauguration, but that' just what D.C. Mayor Marion Barry did. In fact, a short time after his inauguration Barry Mayor announced that he would seek private contributions rather than use public funds to pay off a $78,000 debt from the four-day January inauguration ceremonies for Barry and seven members of the D.C. Council.
Barry became a "celebrity" in January 1990, when he was videotaped during a sting operation smoking crack cocaine and was arrested by the FBI on drug charges. He served six months in a federal prison. After being released from jail he was elected to the Council of the District of Columbia and then served as mayor from 1995 to 1999.
