1898 William McKinley Signed Naval Commission For Commission to Rear Admiral. Original military commission signed by William McKinley as President of the United States. One page, partially printed on vellum and retaining the original blue seal, the commission is dated February 19, 1898 and appoints Francis M. Bunce a “Rear Admiral in the Navy from the 6th day of February 1898 in the service of the United States.” Countersigned by  Secretary of the Navy John Davis Long. The commission appoints Francis M. Bunce to the high position of Rear Admiral in the U.S. Navy. Earl in his 40 year career Bunce served as a junior officer for the Union in the Civil War and participated in the naval blockade of the Confederacy. 

In 1897 while serving as a commander of the New York Navy Yard, Bunce gave the order to the battleship USS Maine to get underwa to Floida to join the North Atlantic Squdron and then deployment to Cuba where the inconic explosion aboard the Maine which caused the start of the Spanish-American war. 

Included is a letter of provenance from Raptis Rare Books that explains that the commission was received by desent in the Bunce family. A photo of Bune is also included, which would be an excellent addition should you decide to frame the document.
