Rarely seen collection of artifacts from the 1994 State Visit of Nelson Mandela, President of the Republic of South Africa. The event was held at The White House April 4, 1994. Includes six different ephemera items, 1) The menu from the State Dinner, Invitation card to the luncheon with Nelson Mandela at the Congressional Black Caucus event, a card from the White House Social Secretary requesting social security number birth dates of the attendee for security reasons, a card that states "On the occasion of the visit of Mr. Nelson Mandela President of the Republic of South America and a card that was to be presented with photo identificational at the The White House, and the original engraved outer envelope with the White House return address in gold. From the remarks by President Clinton at the State Dinner:

"Your captivity symbolized the larger captivity of your nation, shackled to the chains of prejudice, bigotry, and hatred. And your release also freed your nation and all its people to reach their full potential, a quest too long and so cruelly denied."

Historical Notes

Instead of the usual State Dining Room, the Clintons switched their venue to the East Room, where a dais was set up enabling some 200 guests to get a good look at the South African leader.
