Historical Notes

Nelson Rockefeller was a dominant figure in mid-20th-century Republican politics, serving four terms as Governor of New York from 1959 to 1973. A liberal Republican, he sought the presidency in 1960, 1964, and 1968, but was repeatedly blocked by the party’s conservative wing.
