1861 Civil War “One Flag and One Government” Union Patriotic Flag Cover.
A simple but striking 1861 Civil War Union patriotic cover featuring a large red and blue American flag surmounted by a patriotic liberty-cap motif and accompanied by the emphatic slogan:
“One Flag and One Government.”
The bold red-and-blue design encapsulates one of the central Union arguments of the Civil War: that the United States constituted a single nation whose government and flag could not be divided by secession.
Importantly, this particular design can be documented to the opening months of the war. The Chester County History Center records a letter written by Union soldier Charles Speakman from Camp Carroll near Baltimore on July 23, 1861, noting that his envelope and letter carried the illustration “One flag and one Governmenty.
Unused, with strong patriotic graphics and excellent visual appeal.
From a large collection of patriotic civil war covers in very fine condition that we have acquired.
Illustrated patriotic envelopes (covers) exploded in popularity as the Civil War began. The National Postal Museum notes that Union patriotic envelopes actually appeared before hostilities commenced and subsequently employed flags, political leaders, slogans, soldiers and other symbols to express support for the Union cause.
