Nixon faced John F. Kennedy in a close, hard-fought race. The first televised debates hurt Nixon’s image, highlighting Kennedy’s charisma. Nixon campaigned in all 50 states but lost narrowly. His platform focused on strong foreign policy, economic growth, and resisting Soviet influence.
