Civil War Satirical Cover – “Western Virginia vs Eastern Virginia” Mule Cartoon.  Not often seen Civil War patriotic cover featuring a bold and humorous cartoon of “Western Virginia” attempting to restrain a stubborn mule labeled “Eastern Virginia.” The illustration cleverly reflects the political divide that led to the formation of West Virginia in 1863. Beneath the image appears the biting caption, “No folly ’neath the sun surpasses The folly of these suicidal Asses!” Published by Brown & Ryan, New York. A sharp and desirable example of Unionist satire tied to one of the war’s most unique statehood stories. Unused and Original.

From a large collection of civil war covers in very fine condition that we recently acquired.

Historical Notes

This cover reflects the split of Virginia during the Civil War, when western counties opposed secession and ultimately formed West Virginia in 1863. The mule—symbolizing stubbornness or misguided loyalty—represents Confederate-aligned Eastern Virginia, while Western Virginia attempts to pull away.
