Historical Notes

This cover reflects Northern criticism of Confederate President Jefferson Davis and the South’s justification for secession. The phrase “we want to be let alone” was commonly used by Southern leaders to defend their cause, while Northern artists often countered with satire highlighting contradictions—such as claims of strength alongside pleas for independence. The exaggerated references to vast resources and manpower underscore this critique. Printed in violet ink, the cover also stands out visually among Civil War-era patriotic envelopes.
