1861-65 Civil War Union Patriotic Cover Columbia George Washington Shield.
A particularly handsome Civil War Union patriotic cover, printed in red and blue and featuring an allegorical female figure of Columbia standing beside American flags and an ornate shield emblazoned “UNION.” Within the shield appears a portrait of George Washington, visually connecting preservation of the Union during the Civil War with the founding of the nation.
The elaborate multicolor design combines several of the most important symbols employed on Union patriotic stationery: Columbia, the Stars and Stripes, George Washington and the wordUNION itself.
This design is documented in the Civil War Collection of Emory University's Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library, which dates the envelope to 1861-1865 and identifies the central portrait as George Washington. Unused and original.
From a large collection of patriotic civil war covers in very fine condition that we have acquired.
Patriotic envelopes became an extraordinarily popular form of Civil War propaganda. The Smithsonian's National Postal Museum notes that printers produced illustrated stationery carrying flags, political leaders, soldiers, slogans and caricatures, with Union patriotic envelopes.
