Historical Notes

The 1960 Republican National Convention is that it was the first convention to be held in a sports arena, specifically the International Amphitheatre in Chicago, Illinois. This marked a departure from the traditional convention venues, such as hotels or convention centers, and set a precedent for future political conventions in the United States to be held in large arenas or stadiums.
