Scarce Civil War satirical patriotic cover depicting pigs fleeing the U.S. Mint carrying bags of money while accompanied by the caption, "All we want is to be let alone." A clever Union cartoon ridiculing Confederate claims of peaceful intentions by highlighting the seizure of federal property at the outbreak of the Civil War. Unused and original.

From the huge collection of Civil War historical covers in very fine condition that we recently acquired.

Historical Notes

One of the Confederacy's earliest acts after secession was the seizure of numerous federal facilities, including U.S. mints, arsenals, and custom houses located within Southern states. Northern cartoonists seized upon these actions to mock Southern leaders who simultaneously claimed they wished only to "be let alone." This envelope humorously contrasts that slogan with the appropriation of federal property and funds
