Civil War patriotic envelope featuring a humorous engraved cartoon of an oversized bird labeled SOUTH stretching its neck toward a much smaller NORTH bird near the U.S. Capitol dome. Caption reads: “Don’t you wish you may get it?” A clever wartime satire reflecting Confederate ambition and Northern resistance. Unused example with strong contrast and wide margins. An appealing and unusual political cartoon design from the American Civil War era.

From a large collection of very fine Civil War covers and memorabilia we recently acquired.
Animal caricatures were commonly used in Civil War patriotic covers to mock the enemy or comment on military strategy. The Capitol building in the background reinforces the political stakes of the war.
