Stephen A. Douglas (1813–1861) was a powerful U.S. Senator, Democratic leader, and advocate of popular sovereignty. Known as the “Little Giant,” he defended the Union above party, opposing secession after losing the 1860 election. His unwavering commitment to preserving the nation earned him recognition as a patriot
