1860s Civil War Patriotic Cover – Uncle Sam Crushing the Snake of Secession.
Original Civil War patriotic envelope featuring a blue-printed illustration of Uncle Sam overpowering a snake labeled "Secession."
Beneath the image appear the captions "Or any other man." and "That's what's the matter." Together, the image and wording form a clever political statement attacking the doctrine of secession and expressing confidence in the Union cause.
A desirable symbolic patriotic cover featuring one of the most recognizable figures in American political imagery. The combination of Uncle Sam and the serpent of secession makes for an especially attractive and thought-provoking Civil War design. Unused and original.
This design shows Uncle Sam gripping a snake labeled "Secession" while the accompanying captions read, "Or any other man." and "That's what's the matter." The imagery suggests that secession itself—not any particular grievance—was the true cause of the conflict.
