A terrific Civil War patriotic cover depicting an American flag accompanied by the powerful inscription:
“The blow at Sumter UNITED all the parties of the North, the blood at Baltimore CEMENTED them together.”
The envelope directly references two of the seminal events of April 1861 that transformed the secession crisis into Civil War: the Confederate bombardment of Fort Sumter and the Baltimore Riot involving Massachusetts troops traveling to Washington.
An especially desirable cover because its message is tied to specific events at the very beginning of the Civil War rather than simply displaying generic patriotic imagery.
Confederate forces opened fire on Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861, prompting Lincoln's call for troops and an extraordinary wave of Northern patriotism. Days later, Union soldiers passing through Baltimore were attacked by a secessionist mob. Together, the events helped unite previously divided Northern political factions behind preservation of the Union.
