Classic and particularly appealing Spanish-American War patriotic mechanical pin dating from 1898. The front features a colorful enameled American flag mounted on a brass pin. Historical Notes

On February 15, 1898, the U.S. battleship USS Maine exploded and sank while anchored in Havana Harbor, killing more than 260 American sailors. The ship had been sent to Cuba during a period of growing tension between Spain, which still controlled the island, and Cuban revolutionaries seeking independence.

Although the actual cause of the explosion was uncertain—and remains the subject of historical debate—American newspapers and much of the public quickly placed responsibility on Spain. Sensational newspaper coverage helped turn the disaster into a national cause célèbre, and the cry “Remember the Maine, to Hell with Spain!” became one of the most famous slogans in American history.
