1861 Tomb and Shade of Ellsworth" Civil War Patriotic Cover. illustration on a Civil War-era patriotic envelope that features a ghostly figure of the first Union officer killed in the war, Colonel Elmer Ellsworth. Title reads "Tomb and Shade of Ellsworth / His Spirit Still Lives.  Inscription on the left edge identifies the cover as being produced in 1861 by J. Magee, Philadelphia. Original.

Historical Notes

Colonel Elmer Ellsworth was killed while removing a Confederate flag from a hotel in Alexandria, Virginia. The phrase "Tomb and Shade of Ellsworth" became a very popular slogan during the civil war era.
