1860s Civil War Sailor & Flag Cover "We Have Nailed Our Colors To The Mast".  Features a sailor nailing an 11 star flag to the mast. The U.S. flag is shown with eleven stars, referencing the initial seceded states, a symbolic device used in Northern wartime imagery to underscore that although states had departed, loyalty to the Union remained fixed and unbroken. Original.

From a large collection of Civil War patriotic covers in fine condition that we recently acquired.

Historical Notes

During the Civil War, Northern artists and printers often depicted the U.S. flag with a reduced star count to symbolically represent the states that had seceded. An 11-star flag typically alludes to the first wave of secession in 1860–61 (South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina).
