Historical Notes

On October 29, 1940, Wendell Willkie held a campaign rally in Louisville, Kentucky, during his bid for the U.S. presidency. He spoke to a large crowd at the Armory, where he emphasized the importance of American unity and the need for the country to prepare for war. He also criticized President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal policies and accused him of seeking to involve the United States in another world war. Willkie's speech was well-received by the audience, and he went on to win the state of Kentucky in the 1940 presidential election.
