1946 Rare U.S. Secret Service History of the White House Police Force Document. A 20 sheet document dated July 15, 1946, sent to Frank J. Wilson, Chief, U.S. Secret service, Washington D.C. on the letterhead of the Treasury Department, Office of the Chief, U.S. Secret Service. The document drafted for Chief Wilson provides a "brief history of the original and development of the White House Police Force," from its creation in 1922 until the year 1946 including a detailed roster of all members of the division, including those who died while serving. Little has been written about these brave men who were responsible for the lives of U.S. Presidents. Original, and from the collection of a former White House Lieutenant who was a member of the first group of White House Police officers.
From the document:
"The men who serve today as member of the force, and those who are to serve in the future, have a high standard of service to attain, but ever mindful of the confidence placed in them, to a man, they will ever strive to be worthy of the high honor or protecting the President of the United States."
The White House Police Force was established in 1922 by President Warren G. Harding to provide dedicated protection for the Executive Mansion and its grounds, relieving the Metropolitan Police Department of that responsibility. Initially a small unit, the force was tasked with guarding the White House, its entrances, and nearby federal buildings. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, its duties expanded to include the safety of the President’s family and visiting dignitaries. During World War II, the force took on heightened security responsibilities amid fears of sabotage or attack. In 1946, it was formally merged into the newly created U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division.
