An exceptional pair of official White House photographs documenting the historic reconstruction of the Executive Mansion during the Truman administration.

Although they appear similar at first glance, these photographs preserve two different official records of the same historic moment.

The first photograph, taken by White House photographer Abbie Rowe on May 17, 1950, captures the dramatic interior of the White House during its complete reconstruction, when little remained except the original masonry walls supported by an immense framework of new structural steel.

Just weeks later, on June 1, 1950, Rowe photographed a finished drawing by noted artist Lili Réthi, whom the Truman administration commissioned to chronicle the renovation through a series of remarkable architectural sketches. Rather than depicting a different stage of construction, Réthi's drawing artistically interprets the very scene recorded in Rowe's earlier photograph.

Together, these official White House photographs offer two complementary perspectives of the same historic event—one through the precision of photography and the other through the eye of an accomplished artist
