1896 Refusal of Democratic Newspapers To Support Results of the Democratic Convention. Interesting 20 page pamphlet that purportedly reports the results of a survey conducted by telegrams to "Leading Democratic Papers" regarding whether or not they would support the Chicago platform and nominees.  A great number of the  responses, not coincidentally, were from newspapers owned by William Randolph Hearst and include comments such as: The Providence Journal and Bulletin will never support any platform of repudiation and Anarchy. Whether this break in Democratic support was responsible for William Jennings Bryan's defeat at the polls is unknown. Original.

Historical Notes

"Editorial expressions from 150 leading democratic organs."
