William McKinley: An Impressive Lock of the President's Hair. What would appear to be at least a couple of dozen lengthy strands, curled around a portrait of McKinley under glass, and set into a lovely Victorian brooch. Nicely mounted for display along with a calling card of a "Miss Oliver." The card is marked, presumably in her hand, "President's Hair. Presented by Ida McK. Aug. 10, 1899." Also in the frame is a fine vintage photo of McKinley and wife Ida. This lot is accompanied by a handwritten letter from legendary collector Robert White, asserting that the item was obtained directly from Miss Oliver in her old age. Original. Professionally matted and framed with conservation quality glass. Ornate raised scroll work on the frame.

Sold at Heritage Auction Galleries December 2, 2008 to The Dan Hansen Collection. The description is directly from the Heritage catalog.

Historical Notes

Robert White's collection was estimated to be worth $5 million and numbered about 100,000 items.
