During the campaign, Theodore Roosevelt was such an enthusiastic supporter—and prolific adviser—of his chosen successor that political humorists joked that T.A.F.T. stood for “Take Advice From Theodore.” Taft nevertheless defeated Democrat William Jennings Bryan, who was making his third presidential run.
