 An inside page describes the newspaper's position clearly and eloquently as: "An Independent Weekly Newspaper, especially devoted to the cause of CIVIL and RELIGIOUS FREEDOM, (Without respect to creed or nativity) - The strict construction of our Federal and state constitutions - the preservaton of our glorious Union and the perpetuity of its primitive republican institutions; and opposed to every form of Chuch and State union, Priestcraft, Bigotry, Sectionalism, Intolerance, Fanaticism and every species of Humbg and Delusion which it may be sought to plunder, oppress, deceive  or defraud, or to deprive any of their Equal RIghts under a free repubican government. Know-Nothingism, Black-Republicanism, Maine-Lawism, and most other isms fo the day will, therefore, continue to be exposed and combated throught its columns, as heretofore.
