Original.
The outer envelope is signed by W.H. Armstrong of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania who joined McClure on the journey throughout the West and Mexico and is so referenced by McClure in his book.
Alexander Kelly McClure (1828–1909) was a prominent Pennsylvania journalist, politician, and editor of the Philadelphia Times. A staunch anti-slavery advocate, McClure played a key role in organizing the Republican Party and was instrumental in Abraham Lincoln’s 1860 presidential campaign. He served as a Pennsylvania state senator and was known for his behind-the-scenes political influence. During the Civil War, McClure remained a close political ally of Lincoln and was a trusted advisor, especially on Pennsylvania matters. His writings and memoirs, including Lincoln and Men of War-Times, provide valuable firsthand insights into Lincoln’s leadership and the political climate of the era.
