1974 Gerald Ford Signed Letter to Washington Star Reporter.  Typed and signed letter as President, on the official White House letterhead with embossed presidential seal and addressed to Philip H. Love, a well known reporter for the Washington Star. The letter by Ford, references's Love's comment about Ford's "profound" statements of August 9th, after Ford was inaugurated President in the East Room of the White House, after the resignation of President Richard Nixon.  Ford's friendly letter also references their shared love of cigars and swimming. In that year Ford has a pool installed at the White House during his presidency but was villified by the Press and his political advertsaries as a waste of taxpaper money. Ford says "I do think plans are in the making so that I will be able to continue swimming daily without undue stress to the press corps."

Attractively double-matted and framed with portraits of both Nixon and Ford.

From the Dan Hansen Collection

Historical Notes

Aides had reportedly warned Ford that the construction of a pool would ensure that he only lasted a year in the presidency, and should wait until after his potentially successful re-election in 1976, which did not happen.
