1818 Presidential Land Grant Signed by as President By James Monroe. Military land grant awarding one hundred and sixty acres in Illinois to the heirs of deceased private Matthew Aimes. Vellum,  with engraved scene in top left corner depicting soldier and family receiving the grant from Columbia holding a Union sheild. Paper seal in lower left tied to certificate. Dated November 29th, 1818. Signed by President James Monroe and countersigned by Josiah Meigs, Commissions of the General Land Office.

Staring during the American Revolutionary War, veterans often received land grants instead of pay.
