1885 President Grover Cleveland Signed Naval Commission Promotion to Commodore. Original military commission signed by Chester A Arthur as President of the United States. One page, partially printed on vellum and retaining the original blue seal, the commission appoints Francis M. Bunce to Commodre in the Navy from the 1st  day of March 1895 in the service of the United States. Countersigned by  Secretary of the Navy.  Early in his 40 year career Bunce served as a junior officer for the Union in the Civil War and participated in the naval blockade of the Confederacy. 

In 1897 while serving as a commander of the New York Navy Yard, Bunce gave the order to the battleship USS Maine to get underwa to Floida to join the North Atlantic Squdron and then deployment to Cuba where the inconic explosion aboard the Maine which caused the start of the Spanish-American war. 

From the personal collection of a 50-year collector who is a descendant of the Herbert Hoover family.
