1985 Rare Ronald Reagan Sunday Official Inaugural Medal. Silver plated bronze medal. This medal was produced for distribution to VIPs who attended the actual special inaugural ceremonies held on Sunday January 20, 1985. The public inauguration was held the following day, Monday January 21, 1985.  

The public inauguration was held on Monday because of a long-standing tradition that it not be held on Christian Sabbath. However, so that there would be continuity of office, a private inaugural ceremony was held in the White House on the Sunday where Reagan and Bush were officially sworn in by the Chief Justice of the United State. 

These official inaugural medals were distributed to the invited guests who were in attendance at the Sunday ceremony.

Historical Notes

The obverse shows an image of the White House at the top. Below it is a six line quotation by President John Adams. At the bottom right is the inscription John Adams/November MDCCC.

The reverse includes the Seal of the President at the top and the inscription The Administration / Of The Oath of Office / To / Ronald Reagan / President / And /George Bush / Vice President / of the United States of america / The White House / January 20, 1985. 

The dates of give other occassions when inauguration day fell on a Sunday and two ceremonies, one private and the other public, were inscribed on the edges of the medal, 1821; 1849; 1877; 1917; 1957.
