Civil War patriotic envelope depicting a donkey labeled "Secessionist." The illustration mocks Southern secession by portraying it as stubborn, foolish, and burdened by its own actions. Political caricatures such as this became popular during the war as inexpensive yet highly effective pieces of Union propaganda distributed through the mail. Unused and original.
From a large collection of Civil War patriotic covers we recently acquired.
Political cartoons relied heavily on animals to convey ideas instantly. Here, the donkey symbolizes stubbornness rather than its later association with the Democratic Party. By ridiculing secession itself, publishers reinforced Northern morale while encouraging support for preserving the Union through humor as well as patriotic conviction.
