1860  Stephen Douglas Anti Abraham Lincoln  "Black Republican" Maine Newspaper. Very interesting historical newspaper from Maine with a ballot promoting the Democratic candidate Stephen A. Douglas for President vs Abraham Lincoln. The ballot also includes the names of the Electors and a number of state and local candidates.  4 pgs. Original.

To say the articles were unkind to Lincoln would be a gross understatement, with one bold comment called Lincoln's running mate in the 1860 election, Hanibal Hamlin, the "Black Republican Candidate for Vice President", as a member of the Republican Party who was sympathetic to the abolitionist movement.

Another section makes the editor's position on slavery very clear, including "But there is the most positive evidence on hand to show that the authors of the Declaration (of Independence), did not intend to embrace the negro slave in the application of its sentiments."
