Very special low numbered silver medal that was produced for the 1993 inauguration of William J. Clinton as President of the United States. This limited edition presentation gift was produced as a thank you to a select group of individuals who were invited to make generous $1,000 contributions towards the production of the 1993 Official Clinton Inaugural Medal in 24k gold which was to be permanently retained by the Smithsonian. A total of just 27 of these presentation medals were believed to have been produced. This was medal #12 as engraved on the edge of the medal.
The medal, which is .999 fine silver and a larger 70mmm size, minted by Hoffman & Hoffman of Carmel California were issued under the authority of the Comittee for the 52nd President Inaugural. The medal, which is displayed in a handsome presentation wooden box, includes the original Certificate of Authenticity, a signed letter from Congressman Jimmy Hayes, the Chairman of the Inaugural Medals Committee, a Deed of Gift to the National Museum of American History of the Smithsonian Institution and a letter from the National Museum of American History and thanking the person who made the donation, for his support. The Inaugural Medals Committee included many names well known to the medals collecting communitiy including, Joe Levine, Neil MacNeil, Senator Mark Hatfield and several others.
The Smithsonian Institution, often referred to simply as the Smithsonian, is a trust instrumentality, an organization established by the U.S. government as a public trust. It was founded on August 10, 1846, "for the increase and diffusion of knowledge" and is composed as a group of museums and research centers.
