1914 Woodrow Wilson White House Reception Invitation. Invitation to attend a reception with "The President and Mrs. Wilson,
Elegant original White House social invitation issued during the administration of President Woodrow Wilson for a formal White House reception held on January 27, 1914.
Included are the engraved invitation bearing the Presidential Seal, the original inner envelope addressed in script to "The Honorable and Mrs. Hugh M. Smith," featuring the traditional Great Seal of the United States embossed on the reverse flap, and the original outer mailing envelope with the White House return address embossed in gold. Complete invitation groupings retaining both original envelopes are increasingly difficult to locate and provide collectors with a far more complete picture of White House social protocol during the early twentieth century.
White House invitations of this period reflected the elaborate etiquette of the era. Guests received an engraved invitation enclosed within a smaller addressed envelope, typically embossed with the Great Seal of the United States on the reverse flap, which was then placed inside an outer mailing envelope bearing the White House return address. Because these components were usually discarded after the event, surviving examples retaining the invitation and both original envelopes are considerably scarcer than the invitation alone.
