1849 David R. Atchison "President For One Day" Signed. Atchison served as President pro tempore of the U.S. Senate. On Friday March 2, 1959 Vice President Dallas resigned as President of the Senate. The Senate elected Missouri Senator David R. Athison as Senate Pro Tempora. President Polk's term expired on Saturday March 3, 1849. Since Inauguration Day, March 4, 1849 fell on a Sunday President-elect Taylor did not take his oath of office until Monday, March 5th, so some say technically, the President Pro Tempore of the Senate, David R. Atchison was U.S. President on March 4, 1849. While many historians dispute this account its an interesting footnote to presidential history, which if true, alters the sequential numbering of Presidents that we all believe to be true. To add to this story, Atchison is said to have been a slave and plantation owner and staunch pro-slavery activist.
Clipped from a document and includes an attractive bronze plaque that was to become a framed display but never finished.
