Historical Notes

Of the three Union Generals, Winfield Scott is overwhelmingly considered the most historically significant of the three. Although he was elderly and in declining health by the outbreak of the Civil War, his national prominence, long military record, and strategic influence place him far above Benjamin Butler and Robert Anderson in terms of overall historical importance.
