Civil War Patriotic Cover – Zouave Soldier “Washington Via Baltimore” – Color. Attractive original Civil War patriotic envelope featuring a colorful illustration of a Zouave soldier carrying a large American flag and rifle. Behind him is the United States Capitol and a sign boldly reading “Washington Via Baltimore.”

The imagery recalls one of the dramatic episodes at the beginning of the Civil War, when Union troops traveling through Baltimore en route to Washington encountered strong secessionist resistance. The famous Baltimore Riot of April 19, 1861 resulted in casualties among both soldiers and civilians and demonstrated just how precarious the defense of Washington had become.

The Zouave figure is particularly evocative of the early-war period, when brightly uniformed Zouave regiments captured the public imagination. An example of this same envelope design is preserved in the Library of Congress Civil War collections. Unused and quite visually appealing, with strong red and blue coloring.

From a large collection of patriotic civil war covers in very fine condition that we have acquired.

Historical Notes

Civil War patriotic envelopes became a popular means of expressing political and military loyalties. Produced in hundreds of designs, they depicted flags, soldiers, political leaders, military scenes and occasionally biting caricatures.
